Als Costume 1860-1870
from "Folkedragter i Danmark" by Ellen Andersen, 1952

Everywhere in Southern Jylland, with the exception of Rømø, the regional folk costumes were discarded early and only the hat was retained.

The signature elements of the Als costume consist of:

a. base of the bonnet: located at the back of the head, this was typically made of patterned silk, and

b. lace or linen: stiffened with starch, this lace sat curved across the top of the head.

c. chin bow: loose and could be removed.

d. starband (stjernebånd): occasionally placed in the hairline (it likely appears in the image above). It was a set of disheveled curls set on steel wire and often decorated with variegated pearls and sequins. It was intended to imitate the Duchess of Augustenburg Louise Sophie's hairdo.

e. neck scarf: a medium blue or "water-blue" color, silk, tucked into the bodice (see color image, below)

Less definitive elements:

f. apron: made of striped silk (red and yellow for happy occasions; green and blue for somber ones)

g. skirt and bodice: made of dark blue worsted wool.

In 1979, the predecessor organization to the Danish Folk Costume Society put on an exhibition, displaying the finest example of the Als men's costume. Unfortunately, the vest is not clearly visible.
