Als Island

Als Costume 1860-1870
from "Folkedragter i Danmark" by Ellen Andersen, 1952
Everywhere in Southern Jylland, with the exception of Rømø, the regional folk costumes were discarded early and only the hat was retained. In the image above, the hat is made of white floral silk fabric with matching bows. The chin bow is loose and could be removed. Above the hat sits a stiffened crosscloth with a fringe at the edge. A starband (stjernebånd) was placed in the hairline. It was a set of disheveled curls set on steel wire and often decorated with variegated pearls and sequins. It was intended to imitate the Duchess of Augustenburg Louise Sophie's hairdo. Around the neck sits a water-blue silk cloth. The apron is also made of striped silk (red and yellow for happy occasions; green and blue for somber ones). The dress is made of dark blue worsted wool.
