How Can I Get a
Danish Folk Costume?

Sadly, for now, it is extremely hard to even view an authentic Danish folk costume, much less to actually acquire one. This website aspires to change that.

If you want to see a legitimate Danish folk costume in the United States:

a. Elverhøj Museum in Solvang, CA, has one Hedebo Region costume on display

b. National Nordic Museum in Seattle, WA, has one Hedebo Region costume on display

c. Danish American Center in Minneapolis, MN, has one Hedebo Region costume on display

To try to acquire a Danish folk costume, your options are:

a. Join the Dansk Folkedragtforum and ask whether anyone might consider selling you one or a part of one.

b. Join Vi Der Elsker Folkedragter on Facebook, and try to buy one there.

c. Join Danske Folkedansere on Facebook, and try to buy one there.

d. Go to Fanø during the summer months and try to purchase one from the store in town that sells such garb.

e. Go to Amager's Harvest Festival in Store Magleby and ask some of the participants.

f. Attend Danish folk dancing events and ask participants.

g. There are some women who hand weave fabrics using a loom at home. They make fabrics historically consistent with the regions in which they live. One is in Sønderjylland and the other is elsewhere. They might sell you some fabric which you could use to have a bodice or skirt made.

h. If you live in the U.S., there are several wonderful festivals that celebrate Danish culture such as:

   a. Danish Days in Solvang, CA (the "Danish capital of America")

   b. Scandinavian Festival in Junction City, OR

   c. Scandinavian Festival in Thousand Oaks, CA, and

   d. Danish Day in Minneapolis, MN.

While many beautiful costumes are often worn at these events, it can be challenging to source an authentic Danish costume in the United States.

i. Order the fabric from the Aabenraa Folk Dancers Buy and Sell page.

j. Send the pattern to one of the many weavers of folk costume fabric in Sweden. They can be found at Folk Costume Market.

k. Purchase the knitting pattern for a nattrøje, then pay Turkish company De_Smurfs on Etsy to knit it for you: desmurfs95@gmail.com. They are trustworthy, and it will take about 10 weeks.
