Women's Costumes

Overview

Elements of the women's Nordjylland costume:

a. Sweater (nattrøje): Dark green typically, but can also be red
b. Skirt: twill skirt, often in the stunning and distinct pattern for which Nordjylland is rightly famous (see images below)
c. Bodice: has "Viennese fold" in rear
d. Scarf: white linen
e. Apron: printed
f. Headgear: Can be one of two options -

i. bonnet in velvet or silk (can have gold embroidery, as with green silk bonnet below) or

ii. "garden hat" (has white wings at the ears - see image below)

This is the perfect example of the Nordjylland costume, as it features the signature fabric pattern throughout.

Doll displaying 1830-1840 costume
The skirt would have been made of hvergarn (a blend of linen and wool), which was cheaper than pure linen yet warmer than pure wool. The headgear shown here was from Jylland (a "Jysk kappe"), and signified an unmarried woman. A married woman would wear a black hat over the white one.
